Aquarium Fish That are Really Easy To Take Care Of

There is no such thing as a maintenance free aquarium fish – but it is a fact that some fish are way easier to take care of than others.  These fish that  best for people who are just getting started with aquariums, because they are tougher in health and more forgiving of any errors that you as a beginner is bound to make.  Freshwater fish are generally the easiest aquarium fish to take care of.  The top three easiest aquarium fish to take care of are the common goldfish, the Beta,  and the plecostomus.

Bettas

The Betta (a.k.a. the Siamese Fighting Fish) is arguably among one of the easiest aquarium fish to maintain.  It is also one of the most beautiful.  The Betta is a very rugged fish and is known to successfully live in small bowls, unlike other species of fish.  In addition, this type of fish produces much less waste than goldfish.

The male variety of the Betta Fish is very  rough and tough and tends to get into fights with other fish.  Because he was bred to compete in fish fights, is is very likely that he will kill other male Bettas in the same tank .  Female Bettas are a lot more friendly with other tropical fish, however they are much less colorful and their fins are much shorter.  They are able to eat the same type of foods that other tropical fish eat, but they are particularly attracted to bloodworms.

The Common Goldfish

Many hobbyists argue that the common goldfish (and its close relation, the Comet Goldfish) are the easiest aquarium fish to take care of.  They also are far more social than Bettas and come in brilliant colors.  They don't need special diets and can tolerate almost any ornament you decide to add to your tank.

Please note that the egg-shaped goldfish that swim slowly, have bubble-eyes, no top fin or unbelievably long fins are NOT considered easy to care for and  should not live in a tank with Common or Comet Goldfish.  They swim so fast that the fan-tailed or egg-shaped goldfish will never be able to get their fair share of food.

The Plecostomus

The name "plecostomus" refers to a class of aquarium fish that has hundreds of varieties.  Many are harder to take care of than others.  But any plecostumus you find in your local pet shop among other tropical fish should be all right.  They are bottom feeders like catfish or Chinese Algae Eaters and need their own special type of food.

Nevertheless, they are hardy and tolerate swings in water chemistry more than most other varieties of aquarium fish.  The only issue that you may find is that they occasionally outgrow the tank they are in.  This happens unpredictably and it is not known why some grow so much bigger than others.
